Mr Angara won during the last assembly election with a margin of 17,000 votes.
Speaking to Deccan Herald, Sullia BJP President A V Theertharam said that Mr Angara is all set to win over for the fourth time from the constituency with much wider margin. “This is a reserve constituency and probably that is the reason why it is not so much spoken about,” says Mr Theertharam but he says that any other party, which wants to face BJP here will have to do their home work right.
“If BJP does not win in Sullia, then it will not come to power at the State too because everyone knows the hold that BJP has in this constituency,” declares Mr Theertharam.
He says from the past, the people in the constituency have maintained an anti-Congress mindset and nurtured their BJP inclination.
Mr Angara had contested from Sullia for five times in the past, of which he romped the house in 1994, 1999 and 2004 elections, thereby further fortifying the BJP hold in Sullia soil.
With the delimitation, this constituency constitutes of Sullia taluk, parts of Puttur, Kadaba circle, Uppinangady circle, Golithattu, Alanthaya, Konalu,m, Nelyadi, Kowkradi, Ichlampady, Konaje, Shirady and Shiribagilu villages. Statistically it has all the 41 villages of Sullia taluk, 26 villages of Kabada Hobli from Puttur taluk, and 9 villages of Uppinangady hobli. With the delimitation, Sullia constituency now has 1,60,036 voters as against the 1,46,221 voters prior to delimitation.
Mr Theertharam says delimitation has been a clear advantage to BJP because the constituency has received 9 additional villages from Puttur constituency, which is another constituency where BJP has a strong hold.
He further says that in the constituency as the whole, Kadba, Nellyadi, Kaukradi Taluk Panchayats are with the BJP, several GPs are under BJP. Hence he says that all in all it is a favourable situation in Sullia.
Meanwhile, BJP’s major contender Congress has fielded Dr Raghu Bettampady against Mr Angara. Dr Raghu had lost in the elections last time and hence BJP members feel that the entire scene has to turned to their favour as Dr Raghu is not a personality who can grab votes in front of Mr Angara.
Congress Spokesperson M G Hegde speaking to Deccan Herald informed that Sullia elections will certainly not be a cake walk for BJP mainly because Sullia is one constituency which will have the direct effect of the Puttur rebellion created by Shakunthala Shetty, which Congress will encash upon.
He says that though Mr Angara is a wonderful candidate, the ‘BJP wave’ has subsided in the constituency leaving Congress in an advantageous position.
Further, Mr Hegde states that Dr Raghu, who is a retired doctor did not stop serving the people even after the retirement. “He is a wellknown physician who has always been with the people as a doctor and after retirement as a social worker,” he added. JD(S) has fielded Sharatchandra. While the BJP propaganda had reached its second phase, no traces of such activities from Congress or JD(S) has been seen in the constituency.
BJP has completed one round of propaganda and as the second round, candidate Angara himself has started going out on field convincing people about BJP.
One has to wait and watch if this reserve constituency is ‘reserved’ for BJP even this elections or some other party has the power to takes away the throne from the present undisputed ruler, Mr Anagara.
