Age is no bar to have fun and make the best of what life has to offer. Here's a league that refuses to get bogged down by age. They're out to relive their youth, revive the past and live life to its fullest.
Metrolife spoke to a cross section of men and women over 60 to whom their age is their asset to cling on to their youthfulness. They need no age defying treatments, anti-wrinkle creams and hair dyes to look and feel young. It's their attitude to life and an eagerness to explore and expound life itself that keeps them going young.
Age is a state of mind
Well into their 70s Sudarshan K Maini and his wife Reva Maini think age is a state of mind. “As you grow, your interest and your way of thinking keeps on changing and you will always have fun with life irrespective of your age if you are involved in it. Mindset, I think is a constant factor for all ages to have fun,” avers Sudarshan Maini.
Reva seconds her husband's views. “When you grow older it doesn't mean you cannot enjoy and have fun with the innumerable activities in one's preview. Age is no barrier to enjoying life,” she says. The couple still catch up on movies, long drives, clubbing, dancing, and of course, balance their fast-paced life with a good dose of meditation, pranayama and a healthy diet. They shop a lot too.
The Mainis are both part of the Ekal Vidyalaya Movement which plans basic education for the tribal children. Maini Samaj Kalyan Kendra has adopted a village in Lakkenahalli to understand what is required to be done in a typical village to make it economically viable with a provision of minimum facilities.
In her late sixties, Ritu Mallya confesses she loves being around with people, travelling, partying and also swears that she excels as a homemaker. “I feel like I am a 100-years-old only when I get a flu or any other illness. Otherwise I am up and about. My children and grandchildren feel I party more than they do,” says Ritu.
Along with her yoga and brisk walk for about 45 minutes, Ritu packs in as much activity as she can in one day. Gardening, flower arrangements and cooking all have a therapeutic effect says Ritu. She has an active social life and takes time out to shop, club and meet friends regularly. Armed with a degree in psychology and masters in law, Ritu looks into the finances and investments of the company on a regular basis. Health is wealth, thinks Ritu. “If you have health, you have all.”
You will never find the Kothawallas at home. For Roy Kothawalla and his wife Nergez Kothawalla, both in their late 70s, home is just a place to rest. The couple go clubbing, play cards and shop together. They hang out at the Forum and Lifestyle on a regular basis. “We don't rest. There's never a dull moment in our life. Books, travelling and hanging out with friends keeps us young and active,” says Nergez Kothawalla.
Flying high
Well into his seventies, Air Vice Marshal (retd) Aijt Lamba thinks sitting at home is a punishment. His 9 to 5 job works as a good therapy for him. He owns a microlight and flys it as well. “My Air Force career has taught me to live for the day and enjoy life to the full. I playing golf and squash. I don’t count calories, but you have to be careful with your diet at this age (in fact at any age!),” says Lamba.
Flying high
Lamba boasts of a private pilot licence and says he is medically fit to fly and that flying has no age bar. “I have flown 80 different types of aircrafts. It's a passion with me; a part of my life. I still fly 30 40 hours a year," says Lamba.
In line with Lamba is 70-year-old J M Dugar who moved into the City in 1959 and started an automobile higher purchase business. He still works from home and is active in various strategies of the company. He clubs and plays his regular round of cards every evening.
Apart from being among the oldest celebrity couples in Bangalore, Mohan and his wife Priya Mascarenhas have a garden and house which is among the most well maintained ones in the City. ‘Old’ and ‘retirement’ are just not found in their vocabulary. “One never gets old,” says Priya, “it's state of mind. I was the eldest in my family. So I took up a lot of responsibility when I was very young. Though I was not very brilliant, my hard work and attitude to life is what has got me where I am." The couple have travelled to over 75 countries. Partying and clubbing are high on their list of must do’s. While Priya says she instantly connects with people and enjoys being around them, Mohan doubles up as a good team player.
He motivates the employees in his company to aim high. Priya's pastime includes painting and music. "It's hard work, prayer and discipline of mind and the heart that has brought us thus far," says Priya.
