Doctors at government hospital refuse to work after 5 pm
DH News Service, Kolar Gold Fields:
The new policy of the government seems to have failed as the doctors are not ready to work till 8 pm.

Though the Government hospitals are ordered to extend the timing of Out Patients’ Department in order to help poor people, Government Hospital here has not implemented it  as the doctors are not serious about the order.

The Government has extended the out-patient department’s timing from 10 am to 8 pm against 10 to 5 pm in order to help patients. Moreover, the government had even issued a notification stating that  additional amount along with the salary Rs 300 and Rs 100 will be given for the doctors and nurses respectively.

The new policy of the government seems to have failed as the doctors are not ready to work till 8 pm.

As a matter of fact, many government hospital doctors  treat the patients at their own residence in the evening, after finishing their work in the hospital. They earn around Rs 2,000 in 3 hours.   Even if they work during the three hours in hospital, they would get only Rs 300. Hence, they like to work at home to gain more money.

Unfortunately, poor people are not getting the treatment during this time as doctors are not available in the hospital. Doctors have found it impossible to work for additional 3 hours. As a result, poor patients coming to hospital are forced to return home with disappointment.

Loss of lives

As there is a dearth of doctors in the hospital, patients are losing their life in emergency cases.

Former city municipal member R Prabhakar died of heart attack on the way, while he was being taken to Bangalore for further treatment as he failed to get required treatment in KGF hospital.

Though the hospital possesses modern machineries they have been of no use as there are no technicians who have the knowledge of operating the machines.

Ambulance

The patients are suffering due to shortage of physicians. An anaesthetist who has been given lodging facility is also of not much use as his service is not available during times of accidents and crisis as he travels to Bangalore daily. Further, the ambulance which is in a very bad condition is always under repair and exists only for namesake.

Protest

Former CMC president and Congress leader Das Chinnasavari has warned of holding a strong protest in front of the hospital against the behaviour of doctors in the hospital on September 3.
