Seeking parity with actor Sanjay Dutt, who was released on bail on August 20, four 1993 Mumbai serial blasts convicts on Thursday approached the Supreme Court for relief on the grounds that they too were not provided with the copy of judgement at the time pronouncement.
A bench said the petitions would be heard on September 7 by the bench headed by Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan, who has been hearing the petitions of other convicts.
During the “mentioning”, Senior Counsel Abhishek Manu Singvi submitted that the convicts might be released on interim bail as other convicts including Sanjay Dutt had been released on bail on the same grounds.
Prime accused Tiger Memon’s three close relatives — Yusuf Memon, Rubina and Essa; and Mubina Bhivandiwala in separate applications prayed for interim bail pending pronouncement of detailed judgement.
Special TADA Judge Pramod Kode on July 27 sentenced Yusuf, Rubina and Essa to life imprisonment for participating in the blasts conspiracy. Mubina was sentenced to five years rigorous imprisonment as she had allowed her flat to be used as a venue for conspiracy meetings.
