CPM stages protest
DH News Service, Madikeri:

CPI(M) district unit staged a protest on Thursday outside Deputy Commissioner’s office demanding prohibition of  ‘advance trade’ pertaining to the essential commodities and to strengthen the public distribution system.

CPI(M) State Secretary N Y Gurushanth, district Secretary Peter Lobo, leaders P R Bharath and Vasanth Kumar Hosamane lead the protest which was particiapated by several other CPI(M) leaders. The protest commenced at General Thimmaiah Circle and assembled at Deputy Commissioner’s office.

The protestors said that the cost of essential commodities are rising day by day and hence said that the common man’s food security must be retained by controlling this price hike by strengthening the Public Distribution System and by solving the agriculture crisis.

They said that the agricultural labourers and other unorganised sectors must be rendered with social security by framing two separate legislations.

They demanded that Acts pertaining to protection of rights of Adivasis and other forest residents must be implemented, the Reservation for Women Bill must be submitted soon, Foriegn Direct Investment must be kept away from retail trade and the Indo-American Nuclear Treaty must be dropped immediately.

They said that an open discussion must be held on the pros and cons of Greater Talacauvery Project and the government must root its decision on the outcome of the discussion.

They condemned the fact that though Kodagu was declared as a part of Karnataka, it is still out of the purview of Revenue Law of 1964, which they said must be implemented in the district.
