After the alternate road connecting Jayapura and Sringeri was washed away by flood twice, it has been reconstructed for the third time. Thus the villagers have finally got a solution for the long standing problem.
This connectivity road was built after the bridge construction works across Suragunda stream near Jayapura was taken up.
The alternate road was built using a narrow pipe, which was protested by the local residents. But yet the authorities concerned went ahead with the construction works brushing aside the protest. As a result of this sub standard and unplanned work, the newly built road was washed away during the heavy rains. Raged by this the local residents even went to attack the PWD engineer.
For the second time when the road was washed away, the daily life of the people was disturbed and transportation facilities came to a stand still.
It was then the local residents voluntarily put up a foot bridge for commuting. Residents of Basarikatte and Makkikoppa areas faced huge problems. Government buses were compelled to use distant alternate routes to reach Shringeri, as a result of which B G Katte, Agalagandi road was completely spoilt.
Jayapura residents formed Nagarika Vedike and warned the authorities of blocking the road if alternate road works were not taken up immediately.
Taking note of the situation and the problems faced by the people, the district administration immediately took up the construction work and thus the Jayapura-Shringeri road was set right for the third time.
