Just a decade ago they were a common sight on the streets of Kolar. But today the Mele Madheshwara jogi are far and few in the area. With the onslaught of development and globalisation, life styles have indeed changed and these interesting aspect of our society have also been effected by them and therefore hard to come by.
Change is a global phenomena and there is no escaping it. The standing example to this fact is the change in the profession of these jogis.
Spread across Chamarajanagar, , Mysore, and Mandya, the primary vocation of this sect is begging, They leave their houses around the time of the Suggi festival and go begging from door to door and singing devotional songs of Male Madeshwara only to return when the monsoons begin. They are indeed a sight for sore eye with their bright costumes and base voice that hit the highest note.
However their numbers are dwindling and not many of the next generation are willing to beg for a living. They are no longer spotted with the same frequency around the state these days.
So if you do come across one of them, enjoy their treat for it is indeed a rare sight to spot one of these interesting aspects of our society that we are losing to change
