Murali to miss Twenty20 bash
Sri Lanka’s prolific spinner Muttiah Muralitharan has been ruled out of the inaugural World Twenty20 Championships next month due to an elbow injury.
“Murali is affected by an elbow injury and he will be out for four to six weeks,” Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) secretary Kangadaran Mathivanan told AFP. “He is definitely out of the Twenty20.”

Ljubojevic holds fancied Negi
World’s youngest Grandmaster Parimarjan Negi continued to look for an elusive victory and drew with Ljubomir Ljubojevic of Serbia in the 7th round of the NH chess tournament, reports PTI from Amsterdam.
Playing for the Rising Stars team Parimarjan took his personal tally to two points from seven games while his team continued to excel against the ‘Experience’ side.
With just three rounds remaining in the unique tournament that features young guns of the world taking on Experienced players, the Rising Stars took another step forward towards victory demolishing opposition 3-2 on another keenly-contested day.
Another soccer player dead
Zambian striker Chaswe Nsofwa of Israeli second division side Hapoel Beer Sheva collapsed and died during a practice match in the southern desert city on Wednesday, ambulance staff said, reports Reuters from Jerusalem. Nsofwa, 27, was pronounced dead at Beer Sheva's Soroka Hospital after resuscitation efforts on the pitch failed to revive him, the Magen David Adom (MDA) ambulance service said.
"We found the player lying on the ground unconscious as his friends tried to help him. He was in a state of clinical death," ambulance worker Carmel Cohen told Israel Radio. Nsofwa, who was part of Zambia's African Cup of Nations squad in 2002, scored two goals for Hapoel in their 3-0 win over Hakoah Amidar/Ramat Gan at the weekend.
Parliament pats football team
Parliament on Thursday congratulated the Indian football team for its “historic” win over Syria in the ONGC Nehru Cup, reports PTI from New Delhi.
“The Indian football team has made the nation proud when they lifted the prestigious Nehru Cup after defeating formidable Syrians,” Speaker Somnath Chatterjee said in Lok Sabha amid thumping of desks by members.
“The spirited performance by the Indian team will certainly usher in a new era in the Indian football. I am sure the House will join me in congratulating captain Baichung Bhutia and his teammates for their historic win and wish them great success in their future matches,” Chatterjee.
Ajax fail to qualify
Four-time European football champions Ajax failed to reach the European Champions League group stage for the second consecutive season, eliminated by Slavia Prague in qualifying, reports AP from London. Ajax lost 2-1 in Prague on Wednesday to two goals by Stanislav Vlcek and lost 1-3 on aggregate. Ajax lost to FC Copenhagen at the same qualifying stage last year.
Joining Slavia in Thursday’s group stage draw were 2006 runner-up Arsenal, Valencia, Werder Bremen, former champions Steaua Bucharest and Benfica, Rosenborg, Ukraine clubs Shakhtar Donetsk and Dynamo Kiev and Turkey’s Besiktas and Fenerbahce.
