They are the real role models
Sir, It is heartening to note that Manjunath of Shivani village in Tarikere taluk, a humble farm labourer, and Vishwanath of Gulbarga, another poor labourer, have made Karnataka proud by exhibiting rare qualities of character (DH, Nov 26).
Manjunath displayed courage and fortitude and presence of mind in the nick of time, when he noticed that the railway track at one spot was out of alignment.
He ran on the tracks for over a kilometer waving his shirt to the on-coming Arasikere-Harihar Passenger train and did succeed in stopping the train, averting a major disaster and thereby saving life and limb of 1500 passengers.
Vishwanath, for his part, demonstrated sterling honesty by handing over to the police the 12th century Mogul dynasty silver coins he had found while digging.
What a difference they have made in a world where acts of terror, sabotage and deceit have become the order of the day! They are real role models for us to emulate. May their tribe increase.

School dropouts
Sir, Your editorial Improve quality (DH, Nov 30) aptly conveys the need to address the vital issue ie., improvement of the quality of education in schools in order to arrest the abnormal growth of dropouts. The conditions of rural schools are worst as most of the schools in rural areas lack proper buildings, toilet facilities, and adequate libraries. The teachers working in these schools will have to re-fashion their outlook and inculcate in the minds of children about the necessity and value of the education.

Defeat them
Sir, During his party’s state executive meeting, former Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy did not give any convincing reason for not transferring power to the BJP. He has also not explained, why he and his MLAs did not support the trust vote especially after submitting a sworn affidavit to the Governor. However, he has justified his decision by raking up Ayodhya issue. But how does this justify Mr Kumaraswamy’s decision not to support the trust vote? By the same logic, Mr Kumaraswamy and his party must also be defeated.

People’s victory
Sir, Under intense domestic pressure, Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf has shed his uniform and has handed over the charge of forces to his deputy. Although it is a welcome move, the credit should not go to the President. Inspite of the emergency rule, ordinary people took to the streets to show their discontentment over the military regime. Surely this is a victory of the ordinary folk and of all those who are held in prisons for their stand against an unjust socio-political order.

Shame on them
Sir, The incidents that took place in Karnataka during the last two months and the subsequent drama on the power transfer has brought the image of H D Deve Gowda to the lowest level. The frequent inconsistent stance and the changing statements that emanated from the JD(S) supremo has also helped to erode his image. However, listening to the speeches made by the JD(S) supremo and his sons and supporters one wonders if these politicians ever know what is shame, insult and embarrassments.

Approach UN
Sir, We, the Indians believe in the saying Atithi Devo Bhavah, which means guests are to be treated like god. The ongoing discrimination against ethnic Indians in Malaysia has proved that Malaysia can never be equal to Indians when it comes to treating guests. Indians are denied equal rights in job opportunities, education and political power over there. The central government must go to Commonwealth and UN against the ill-treatment.
