Turn the heat on this winter
The mercury levels are seeing a visible dip indicating the onset of everyones favourite season, winter. Winter fashion has seen a sharp surge in recent times, with every brand worth its name releasing an autumn winter collection. Bindu Gopal Rao checks out the seasons trends

This season, Wrangler goes undercover with a collection inspired by spies, espionage and the secret service.  Die-hard customers can now gain special access to shirts emblazoned with badges and hidden messages. This collection has a range of denim and non-denim jackets, empire waists, trench coats and chunky knits jackets in denim and non-denim and dark colours are the undertone of the entire collection.

The women’s line is equally dark, with lurex, lace and foil prints adding that touch of bond girl glamour.  Long tops, belted shirts and hooded styles and black, gray and dark indigo jeans are all part of this collection. The collection for men comprises of shirts emblazoned with badges and hidden messages and trendy flip over reversible knits.

Pepe Jeans London’s Autumn Winter has been designed with attention to minute details with Dress Code, Gaucho and Western Show being the major stories of inspiration. Dress Code for women is super feminine, sharp and modern where the old Victorian look meets the Goth Cult. The contemporary approach is emphasised through the use of geometric and modernist reference points for prints. Fabrics are fluid, rich and luxurious yet refined which enhances the feminine silhouettes. This premium range focuses on key looks that comprises of dresses with leggings, corset tops with drainpipe and dressy long sweaters for a plush cold winter.

Simply denim

Lee Cooper’s Red Diamond range that caters to the rebellious, irreverent, straight-talking generation, consists of denims, non-denims, capris, knits, wovens and winter wear. Explains Ameet Panchal, CEO Lee Cooper (India) Pvt. Ltd., "today's fashion-conscious Gen X in India knows the difference between a good pair of jeans and a great one, and we believe we can fill this gap. The team at Lee Cooper is very excited to introduce the Red Diamond collection, which will introduce revolutionary designs and garments to our fashion-conscious customers." The essence of the Red Diamond collection is a chic product with heavy detailing.

The silhouettes include long and skinny, fitted and tapered, for both top and bottom wear. Metal studs further highlight the punk rock look. The palette consists of greys, blacks and other neutrals along with saturated dressy colours. The finishes include resin finishes, dry and wet processes including scraping and grinding for a dry and coarse feel.

The bottoms in the Red Diamond collection have fits to suit all body types. Skinny/tapered denims complement the boot cuts, whereas the low slouchy denims complement the fitted straight pairs. Embroidered pockets and contrast piping details are also a highlight of the collection. Says Ameet Panchal, CEO, and Lee Cooper, “the highlight of Lee Cooper’s Autumn Winter collection ‘07 is the Red Diamond range and is aimed at the trend-setting Lee Cooper cult in India. The collection is tailored to cater to the evolving needs of the fashion-conscious consumer.”

Spykar’s collection is based around the idea that it takes two people to create warmth and has been inspired from Mexican styles. A colourful and warm collection is high on surface developments and prints inspired by the tribes of Mexico. The chemistry collection also envelopes a more contemporary fashion for the emergence of sobriety and androgyny. Winter cottons with coated fabrics, denims and cords, washed, worn out and irreparable looks are the style details portrayed.

Natural raw colours such as leather, stone, grays and boiler room blues accompanied with a well-identified separation of colours give a cosmo feel to this collection whereas pastels as cyclamen pink, oak, moss and peat browns give that countryside look. Spykar’s winter chemistry collection makes space for everything that’s classy and casual, right from denims, cargos, jackets, shirts, tees to a distinct variety of accessories like caps, belts, bags, wallets and scarves.

Trends

This season, coats are transformed and have shorter sleeves. Coats combined with thick sweaters or worn with a belt are the main looks. Flowing dresses are abundant occasionally narrowing at the hips. Dresses combined with leggings, high boots or ankle boots definitely make a statement. Wide belts in different materials stand out, to be found on coats, sweaters and dresses, in elastic, leather and vinyl.

Gloves are transformed into an accessory that is full of sensuality and sophistication and can be combined with short-sleeved dresses or coats. Imitation leopard or mink in sophisticated and highly modern garments like waistcoats and belts, definitely add glamour to the look. Mango’s Sunset Boulevard pays homage to the glamour of 40s cinema. Dresses with floral or retro prints, in addition to wide-legged trousers with high, narrow waists explain this trend.

The ‘Night Life’ collection introduces two lines of dresses; one simple with decorations in sequins or gemstones and the other based entirely on the style of the 20s with pleats.  “With Mango's AW '07 collection, we have a wide range for women to choose from and with the winters slowly setting in, we are sure to sell more of long jackets and coats combined with thick sweaters," says Suresh D Bhatia, Country Head & Director, Major Brands (India) Pvt. Ltd. So turn the heat on this winter and look haute!
