The Supreme Court on Friday said that it will hear the petition filed by AIIMS director P Venugopal on Monday.
The petition challenged an amendment in the AIIMS Act that was reportedly meant to remove the director from his post 7 months before his retirement. A bench headed by Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan agreed to hear the plea after Dr Venugopal’s counsel Mukul Rohtagi raised the issue before it.
However, the court refused to hear the plea on Monday morning. Mr Rohtagi submitted that the plea needed to be heard urgently, as the act once signed by the President would lead to removal of the director.
With the AIIMS and Post Graduate Medical Education and Research (Amendment) Act, 2007 passed by both houses of Parliament on Wednesday, AIIMS Dr Venugopal filed the petition seeking direction to the government to desist from implementing it retrospectively.
