Department of Youth Services and Sports (Mysore) rode on twin penalty corner strikes from Prema to quell a stiff Sports Authority of India (Madikeri) challenge 4-2 before being crowned with the State senior women’s hockey league title at the KSHA here on Friday.
Prema, who put DYSS in the lead in the 12th minute through an indirect penalty corner then came up with a crucial short corner conversion, 12-minute before the hooter, when the contest was evenly poised.
Until well into the first-half, SAI looked out of sorts and hardly made any impact in the match. DYSS grabbed the opportunity with both hands as Prema and then Kavyashree put the Mysore outfit in a strong position.
Kavyashree sounded the boards with a low flick off a penalty stroke in the 24th minute after Ashitha’s goalward drive was deflected off the leg of SAI defender Shruthi.
Seconds before the break, SAI pulled one back through Kulsumbi, who placed a pass from Saira Banu past DYSS goalie Neharika.
After the break, both teams showed more urgency. However, SAI in an effort to fetch the equaliser gave too many open spaces in the middle to their rivals. It proved them costly as DYSS skipper Munirathnamma after a solo run down the rightflank cut the ball back to Ashitha, who deflected the delivery into an open goal in the 33rd minute.
SAI replied by forcing two penalty corners within a minute.
However, in the 35th minute, Lekha deflected in a Saira Banu free hit to reduce the margin and keep the contest alive.
Prema then put Mysore team beyond the reach of their opponents with a 38th-minute conversion of penalty corner.
