My tryst with ‘art in a bowl’ began with plucking flowers during morning walks from roadside plants or from branches that traverse invitingly over the walls and to the sidewalks. These flowers were meant for my 92-year-old mother who suffers from Alzheimers which, surprisingly, did not tamper with her creativity. She would spend hours making beautiful garlands out of it.
Or in her own words, “It is enough for me to just sit and watch them.”
Seeing my interest in arranging flowers in a bowl of water, my husband bought some containers. While arranging flowers in the water, the flowers most often lend themselves to design by their shape and colour. A crucial factor is the ability of the flower to balance in the water. The shape of the bowl in which it is arranged too plays an important part. Edges, width, depth and of course, the colour of the container, all help in the way a design evolves. And finally, the art simply happens.
