Law has failed to check female foeticide in India, said the district Sessions Court Judge Mohana Sripada Sangolli.
He was speaking after inaugurating Women Empowerment and Social Justice Day programmes organised by Bangalore Halu Mahamandalli and Kolar district co-operative milk union, at Chikkaballapur on Wednesday.
Though the law was enacted 13 years ago, only in two cases of female foeticide, the accused were convicted, the judge said.
He quoted Basavanna’s vachanas to elaborate on the dichotomy in India’s ideologies on gender and its treatment of women. While women are honoured in literature and in law, in reality women are not treated with due respect, he said explaining the double standard of morality practiced in the society. He said, only through change in heart, the situation can be changed.
He also called upon the women to raise voice agianst oppression. He, however, advised them not to misuse the laws.
President of Kolar Milk Union K N Nagaraj opined that only through the economic development, women can be empowered. Hence, the women should become self-reliant through organisations like Stri Shakti Sangha, he added.
Assistant Commissioner Dr Arundhati Chandrashekhar called upon women to become self-dependent to lead a good life.
Director of the Milk Union K V Nagaraj said that women should overcome inferiority complex and excel in all sectors.
