Though the Suvarna Karnataka Year has ended, the dream of Suvarna Samskrutika Samucchaya in Kodagu has not come true yet. Though about eight months are over after laying foundation stone, the building has not risen from its base.
The then Kannada and Culture Minister H S Mahadeva Prasad and former district in-charge minister Ramachandra Gowda had laid foundation stone for the monument on March 13, but the project has sickened due to certain disputes on the site.
Mr B S Yeddyurappa, the then Deputy Chief Minister, who was also the Finance Minister, has allotted Rs 1.5 crore in the budget for the Suvarna Samskrutika Samucchaya for the district. Accordingly, Rs 1.07 crore has already been released. The remaining Rs 47 lakh will be released once the construction begins. But as disputes over the site surfaced from the very beginning of the project, the PWD could not even initiate the construction works.
Opposition
Former minister M C Nanaiah had opposed the project in the proposed land from the beginning itself complaining that the building would pose problems to the school children.
As the proposal was to have the complex on the play ground near the Government Junior College, the opposers stated that the complex would snatch the playground from the students.
Old and present students of the college, senior sports persons and Cauvery Sene expressed their opposition to the Samucchaya.
In the meantime, Kannada and Culture department Principal Secretary I M Vittalmurthy had advised the district administration to look into the plan of demolishing the Cauvery Kalakshetra and shift the new project to that place.
But as the PW Department objected to this proposal saying that it would increase the expenditure, the district administration decided to build the complex on the playground near the college itself. When the PWD started the project as per the decision of the district administration, Cauvery Sene blocked it.
Months are over after inaugurating the Suvarna Samskrutika Samucchaya in Dharwad. But the one in Kodagu is yet to be commenced for which foundation stone was laid parallel to that in Dharwad.
