MLC Arun Machaiah held lack of quality education responsible for all the failures that India faced and stated that implementation of National Educational Policy is necessary to bring in qualitative change in the field of education.
Addressing the gathering at the 10th anniversary of General Thimaiah Public School on Thursday, Mr Machaiah said that though a revolution took place in educational field, the literacy rate has not crossed even 60 per cent.
“Kotaria report way back in 1965 recommended that 15 per cent of total national funds must be earmarked for education but no Government has spent more than 8 per cent on education so far,” he added.
He said that the best of brains that pass out from top institutions from India opt to settle down abroad due to better job opportunities. Due to this brain drain, trend nation is at loss as best of talent is not available for India. India has also failed to utilisation of services of professors from these great institutions.
English inevitable
Learning Kannada is mandatory at the primary level but a debate that the students must be taught only Kannada is meaningless in the present globalisation scenario. He said that it was indeed unfortunate that the previous government succumbing to the protests of the litterateurs went to the extent of derecognising private schools.
On the occasion, Mr Machaiah handed over a cheque of Rs 2 lakh for the construction of school building from the MLA’s fund to Kodava Samaja President M M Chengappa.
Earlier inaugurating the programme, Deputy Commissioner K R Niranjan said that parents must strive to provide education according to the taste and inclination of the children. Madikeri Kodava Samaja President M M Chengappa, School Principal Saraswathi Chengappa and others were present.
