A technician of the Blue Star air conditioner manufacturing company was injured when the cylinder of an Air Conditioner (AC) blew up, behind the Deepam Complex on MG Road on Saturday evening.
It is learnt that the blast took place at 5.45 pm, injuring the technician, who has been identified as Lazar (28). Police said that the AC unit belongs to Bank of Baroda, in the second floor of the building.
For the past few days, the AC was not working properly and to repair it, the Blue Star company had sent two of its technicians. They found that the gas cylinder did not have enough coolants.
They were refilling the cylinder, when the blast occurred.
The technician, Lazar, was seriously injured as he sustained injuries on his face, neck and chest.
He was immediately rushed to Bowring Hospital, where his condition was reported critical.
Eye-witnesses said that the frame of the AC went off at bullet speed and hit the ACP sheet of the complex in front of it. A piece went and hit the 10-mm thick glass of a nearby showroom, damaging it as well as several products inside.
The loss at the showroom is yet to be estimated.
