Action sought against cop

: Reacting to a report on alleged cruel treatment of poor children at Hanumanthanagar police station, Karnataka High Court Judge and Karnataka State Legal Services Authority executive chairman, Justice V Gopala Gowda has asked State Human Rights Commission Chairman S R Nayak to initiate action. In a letter, Justice Gowda said, “A few days back, Deepu, Girish, Chethan and few other children were playing in a garden. The parents of these children are poor and are coolies. The children were wrongfully detained in the police station and were given electric shock by the Inspector. There is blatant violation of human rights of children.”
Residents seek certificates

Residents of Cauvery Nagar (ward no13) in Mahadevapura zone have threatened to take out a padayatra to Raj Bhavan if they are not given holder certificates for houses they have been occupying for over 60 years. The ‘Raj Bhavan chalo’ will take place after ten days. Speaking to reporters here, former councillor Mohammad Nasru said around 20,000 people lived in 4,000 houses built on government land in the place. Only 140 were issued holder certificates in 1975.
Poll boycott threat

Former MP Syed Shahabuddin has asked members of minority community to boycott the elections if no major party gave election tickets to a member from the Muslim community. Speaking at rally organised by the Popular Front of India here on Friday, he charged the political parties with using Muslims as votebanks but refusing to give due representation to them when it came to contesting elections.
New ACP for Bangalore

Praveen Sood is the new Additional Commissioner (Traffic & Security) of Bangalore City who replaced K C Ramamurthy. Praveen Sood had earlier served as Mysore Commissioner. Ramamurthy, who had opted for voluntary retirement, was relieved of his duties on Friday.
CPM convention

The Communist Party of India (CPM) will adopt a resolution to keep the “communal” BJP away from power at its 19th convention to be held at Coimbatore from March 29.
Chemmanur’s new store
Bangalore, dhns:
Chemmanur Jewels, a leading jewellery company of south India, is launching a new showroom ‘Juel’ to cater to the needs of ‘modern women’. Speaking on the occasion, Director Anjana Das said the new showroom will be inaugurated on Infantry Road on February 24.
