Apart from grooming the country's youth into disciplined and patriotic citizens, National Cadet Corps (NCC) for the last 60 years has been giving its cadets an opportunity to get the thrill and joy of outdoor and adventure activities.
The outdoor and adventure activities offered by the NCC is second to none and the camps organised by it for the cadets is testimony to this.
The NCC Directorate of Karnataka and Goa which has its headquarters in Bangalore offers its cadets a whole lot of adventure and sporting activity in and around the city.As part of its camp training the young cadets get the thrill and joy of outdoor and community living as they are made to live under canvas/camp conditions and follow a rugged but interesting routine. Parasailing, microlight flying and horse riding are some interesting activities that are involved.
Parasailing and microlight flying are usually held at the Jakkur Aerodrome where cadets get the thrill of flying. Bangalore being the aviation hub of India, the cadets of the Karnataka Directorate get ample opportunities with regard to flying activities.
The camps organised by NCC are quite different from the other routine summer camps. According to NCC officials the camps are held to develop camaraderie, team work, leadership qualities, self-confidence, self-reliance and dignity of labour among cadets.
This apart there are centrally organised camps where cadets from all parts of the country congregate and live/work together.
“The main aim of NCC is to contribute to national integration. Through the camps and other activities the cadets not only develop a sense of brotherhood but also leadership qualities. The adventure capsules offered by NCC are different from other children’s camps organised by private parties. Here cadets are given a chance to be a part of the adventure activities free of cost. Besides, here the cadets come from different backgrounds which is itself unique,” Directorate Deputy Director-General Air Commodore P Rajesh Rao told Deccan Herald.
The outstanding performance of the Directorate at the recently concluded Republic Day camp held in New Delhi is further proof to the skill and expertise these cadets acquire during in the training camps.
The directorate was ranked fourth in overall performance and in more than 12 disciplines among 16 other directorates. The Karnataka and Goa contingent won the first position in the Flag area, Junior Division Drill, India Corner competition and second position in NIA Quiz and in the Senior Wing.
In the Naval Wing Competitions and the Air Wing Competitions too the cadets excelled winning many medals.
