T T Jagannathan, Chairman of the TTK Industries, was elected unanimously as President of the Indian Golf Union (IGU) at its 50th Annual General Meeting in New Delhi on Friday.
Jagannathan, who was the vice-president of the IGU for three years, replaced former Chief of Army Staff General JJ Singh. The 60-year-old Bangalorean will hold the top post for a year. It is extendable by a year by the IGU Council.
Jagannathan, who became an office-bearer of the IGU in 2002 as the South Zone Council Member, is the fourth from the South to be elected president. The late Ravi Kirloskar, K Rajagopal and P S Kashyap were the other presidents before him.
With the sport looking up like never before in the country, Jagannathan's immediate focus would be to promote the game and take it to the next level.
"The primary focus is to improve the junior training programme, which is already very good," said Jagannathan on Saturday. "The key is to maintain that," he added.
"The other focus obviously will be to raise funds and make IGU stronger," he explained.
Meanwhile, Satish Aparajit, the secretary-general of the IGU, said that the need now is to set up more public courses and driving ranges with the help of the respective state governments.
