Indian men defeated Singapore 3-2 in the 5th-8th place play-offs in the Thomas Cup preliminaries but their women counterparts went down to Thailand by identical margin to bow out of the Uber Cup in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.
India prevailed after a tough battle with Singapore and will now face Hong Kong in a fight for the fifth place. They started on a wrong note with Anup Sridhar losing 21-16, 21-14 to Kendrick Lee Yen Hui in 24 minutes.
However, Arvind Bhat restored parity when he beat Ashton Chen Yong Zhao 21-19, 21-15 in 35 minutes.
Chetan Anand put India ahead when he came from behind to prevail over Derek Wong Zi Liang 20-22, 21-11, 21-6.

In the deciding fifth match of the rubber, Sanave Thomas and Rupesh Kumar held their nerve to defeat Ashton Chen Yong Zhao and Derek Wong Zi Liang 21-16, 21-19 to seal victory.
Hong Kong beat Chinese Taipei 3-1 to set up a clash with India for the fifth place.
