DH: Why has the situation reached such an impasse?
It is the making of the truckers’ federations. When the State government issued a notification calling for the installation of speed governors by the end of 2004 itself, they should have presented their grievances to the government and tried to find a solution to it. Instead, they approached the High Court and filed a case. They lost it. They need to approach the Supreme Court instead of taking their vehicles off the roads indefinitely.
There are allegations that there is unholy nexus between the powerful speed governor lobby and the transport department.
I deny all such allegations and would term them as imagination. If you see the chronology of events, you will realise that the Central government, the state government and the judiciary are all involved in the decision over a long period starting from 1993.
Why is the government so keen on installing speed governors despite such strong opposition to it?
Our only objective is road safety. I do not mean to say the number of accidents will come down but the fatality count will definitely reduce.
Your take on the inability of companies to supply the required number of 7,06,000 speed governors
Many facts have been misrepresented. Contrary to what is being said, there are 11 companies in Karnataka alone which are legally permitted to supply spread governors. Again, I have a written report from the Transport Commissioner in Delhi that the cost of speed governors range from Rs 13,800 to 21,000 there, depending on the make. All talk about the governors being available for Rs 3,000 are rumours. I would like to know the name of the company doing that.
What about the governors not being suitable for luxury cars?
I do agree that they do not fit in some luxury cars as new models keep coming each day. But, once specifications are provided to manufacturers, they would be able to modify to suit different car makes.
