Though City Municipality Corporation has made it mandatory for the slaughterhouses to be opened in specified places, most of the slaughterhouses and meat shops in Kolar seems to be in dark over any such rule.
The rampant sale of meat in residential areas and on footpath has become a cause of concern for the citizens these days. For decades the sale of meat was limited to the meat market at Ammavari Pete Circle as specified by the CMC.
Footpaths
However, the CMC has not bothered to extend the market to meet the demands of the growing City, for many reasons. This has led to increase in meat shops in residential and other areas also. These shops carry out their business on footpath also.
More than 50 meat shops in the City don’t have license and because of the left outs strewn around across the City, this has become a cause of concern among the citizens. Supreme Court a few years ago, had ordered not to permit slaughterhouses or culling of animals in conventional method, in the residential areas.
It also said that only sophisticated slaughterhouses should be permitted to operate. However, none of the slaughterhouses, not even the Corporation seem to implement the Supreme Court regulation.
According the Municipal Act the health officer and the commissioner are given power to take action against the culling of animals and sale of beef. However as the Municipality has not bothered to implement the rule, shops selling the beef are least bothered to follow the rules and to maintain the hygienic conditions as well.
The newly elected Council, need to pay attention immediately to check the growth of illegal meat trade and also to ensure hi-tech slaughterhouses are in place.
