CRICKET / Basavanagudi Cup
Canara emerge champs
Bangalore, dhns:

Riding on man of the match C Raghu’s all-round performance, Canara Bank won the MTR-Nivarana all-India invitational Basavanagudi Cup cricket tournament here at the National High School ground on Sunday.

In the final on Sunday, Canara Bank having set a stiff target of 225 in 30 overs, dismissed Hyderabad Cricket Association XI for a modest 145 to emerge a comprehensive 79-run victor.

Canara, after electing to bat first, made good use of the ideal batting conditions and ran up an intimidating total with C Raghu, G Balaji and Gaurav Dhiman coming good with the bat.

Balaji’s 61 came off mere 51 balls including seven hits to the fence and two over it.

Raghu did one better notching up an unbeaten knock of 53 facing just 36 balls. His knock contained six fours and a six.

In reply, Hyderabad were hampered by lack of partnerships with only Ahmed Quadri (29) and Sounder Rajan (26) making contributions of any worth.

The visitors were rocked at regular intervals and were dismissed by the 25th over.

Aditya Sagar, Sunil Joshi, Rajashekar and Raghu picked up two wickets apiece for the winners.

The bankmen got to deposit Rs 1 lakh, that was up for grab for the triumphant team, in their account. Hyderabad had to be content with Rs 50,000.

Brief scores:

Canara Bank: 224/6 in 30 overs (G Balaji 61, Gaurav Dhiman 43, C Raghu 53, Deepak Chougule 34; Santosh Yadav 3-46, Shoeb 2-28) bt Hyderabad Cricket Association XI: 145 all out in 25 overs (Ahmed Quadri 29, Sounder Rajan 26, Shoeb 25; Aditya Sagar 2-23, Sunil Joshi 2-22, Rajashekar 2-22, C. Raghu 2-10).
