The fire originated from the spot near the petrol bunk close to the land claimed to be belonging to the Adichunchanagiri Mutt. The grass nearby caught fire first and later, it fire began spreading over an area of around 20 acres.
Speaking to Deccan Herald, Divisional Fire Officer Varadarajan, said that more than 30 fire personnel were deployed to extinguish the fire. Their task had become difficult, with the fire rapidly spreading all around. There being no proper road connectivity, is adding to the problems of the fire personnel. “If every thing goes well, we will be able to extinguish the fire as soon as possible,” Varadarajan said.
People staying around Chamundi Hills were seen helping the fire personnel in their effort to douse the fire. There have been a number of small fire incidents atop Chamundi Hills in the past. But, Sunday’s fire is said to be a major one in recent years. Deputy Conservator of Forests Chikkappaiah, could not be reached.
The Chamundi Hills are prone to fire accidents in summer.
