A 35-year-old foreign tourist was allegedly raped in a five star hotel at the state capital on Sunday night. The Jaipur City police have arrested a security person following the complaint of the victim.
The tourist, on a visit to the desert state for the past 10 days, was in Jaipur on the last leg of her India tour, police sources said.
The victim complained to the city police of alleged rape and theft of her mobile handset by a security personnel of the hotel on Monday morning, SP V K Singh said. The accused is being interrogated by the police, he added.
The medical examination of the victim could not be done on Monday. There were unconfirmed, contradictory reports that the victim asked for more time for the examination. Reports also said that she complained of the loss of mobile handset only when she was produced before the magistrate.
However, in her complaint at the police station, in the morning, she had complained of both rape and loss of mobile handset, police sources said.
The state has been unfortunately rocked by incidences of rape and molestation of foreign tourists in the past two years.
One too many
Last month, an American tourist had complained of molestation in the holy town of Pushkar, near Ajmer, by a local priest. In another incident, a 40 year old British journalist was allegedly raped by a guest house owner in Udaipur on Dec 23 last.
In 2005, a German tourist was raped in Jodhpur by two auto rickshaw drivers. In the summer of 2006, the rape of a German student in Alwar (by Biti Mohanty) and that of a Japanese tourist in Pushkar (by a hotel manager), shocked the nation.
