Dhoni has not been penalised, match referee Jeff Crowe said, adding that he needed to get the gloves modified and cleared before using them again.
The gloves came under scrutiny after Dhoni pouched a spectacular catch in the webbing between his right index finger and thumb to dismiss Adam Gilchrist, prompting commentator Ian Healy to question the legality of the gloves. Soon after, Crowe expressed his concerns to the Indian management and Dhoni swapped his camouflage gloves for a blue pair.
On-field umpires Tony Hill and Daryl Harper, third umpire Bruce Oxenford and Crowe found that Dhoni’s gloves had extra webbing between the thumb and the forefinger, a violation of Law 40.2. It reads: “The wicket-keeper's gloves shall have no webbing between the fingers except joining index finger and thumb, where webbing may be inserted as a means of support. If used, the webbing shall be:
A single piece of non-stretch material, which, although it may have facing material attached, shall have no reinforcement or tucks.
Such that the top edge of the webbing does not protrude beyond the straight line joining the top of the index finger to the top of the thumb, and is taut when a hand wearing the glove has the thumb fully extended.”
Crowe said, "Dhoni has not been penalised on this occasion but he has been advised that if he uses the gloves again before they have been modified, inspected and cleared, he could be charged for a breach of Clause C1 of the Code of Conduct.”
