Mahendra Singh Dhoni was not over the moon after India’s commanding seven-wicket win over Sri Lanka that thrust his team into the tri-series finals against Australia at the Bellerive Oval on Tuesday.
“Even though we lost the last game, there were lots of positives. We brought loads of confidence into this match, though every game is a fresh one,” a composed Indian captain said. “This track was more suitable for batting. It was flat though there was some bounce too. I expected something for the quicks in the morning because it was cloudy, but there wasn't much help and they got off to a good start. But our first change bowlers, Praveen and Irfan, bowled really well and got some quick wickets, which was very important because after some time, there was no help for the bowlers and it was difficult to get even the tailenders out.”
All praise for Praveen Kumar, man of the match in his third game, Dhoni went on, “Before today, he didn’t have a single wicket. To get a wicket and back it up with the man of the match award was very heartening. That is what you expect from the youngsters. If he can improve his batting a little more, he will be an asset to the team.”
Explaining the rationale behind playing five bowlers against Sri Lanka, the Jharkhandi said, “We have been batting quite well against Sri Lanka and scoring quite a few runs. We wanted the extra bowler. We have wanted to play swing bowlers against Australia and seamers against Lanka, and that has worked out very well for us. If we do play five bowlers, then the only guy who can miss out is Virender Sehwag.”
Sachin Tendulkar shook off a lean trot with a majestic 63. “Every time people have written about him or written him off, he has proved them wrong. That’s what we have to be really careful what we say or write about him, considering his class and his contribution to Indian cricket.”
In his 103rd match, Dhoni completed 100 one-day catches. “I don't think I am the best ’keeper, though I always try to be safe. As long as I hold the catches that come my way, I am happy,” he remarked, modestly. “My keeping has improved a lot, but there still is scope for improvement.”
