Primary school students in Bangalore Rural District, who come under Below Poverty Line (BPL), will receive bicycles, notebooks, textbooks and school bags irrespective of whether they belong to Scheduled Castes or Scheduled Tribes.
An unanimous resolution in this regard was adopted during the 11th general body meeting of Bangalore Rural District Zilla Panchayat here on Tuesday.
Raising the issue, some members representing Hoskote taluk said while distributing compasses to SC/ST students in their areas, other poor students asked them why they were left out.
Sometimes, certain such rules led to discrimination and created a wide gap between students, they said.
Chaos reigns
Chaos reigned when a member and the CEO got involved in a war of words. CEO K S Satya Murthy threatened to walk out along with officials and asked ZP president C Muniyappa to allot half an hour to each so he could prove that no officials, including himself, indulged in corrupt practices.
Grants sought
Meanwhile, the Bangalore Urban Zilla Panchayat, in anticipation of water shortage during summer in 171 villages, has sought an additional Rs 5.16 grant from the government for making alternative arrangements.
