Science City celebrates National Science Day

Science lectures, workshops, exhibitions and cultural programmes were organised by various education and scientific institutions across the city on Thursday to celebrate the 'National Science Day'.


The National Science Day is held every year on February 28 to commemorate the discovery of ‘Raman Effect’ by Sir C V Raman on this day in 1928.
To mark the occasion, the Bangalore University had organised lectures by two eminent scientists Prof P Balaram, director, Indian Institute of Science(IISc) and Prof H A Ranganath, vice chancellor, Bangalore University.
Prof  Balaram, who spoke on ‘ Research at the border of Chemistry and Biology' recalled that the announcement of Sir C V Raman’s discovery was made in Central College campus and that this rich heritage should be exploited for the development of science in the country.
Prof Ranganath, in his talk on ‘RNA- No longer a poor cousin of DNA’ highlighted RNA’s importance to biology and biotechnology. Sky watch
Indian Institute of Astrophysics had organised a Sky watch programme at its premises, while the Survey of India had organised a Exhibition on ‘Art and Science of Map making’.
 The Tata Memorial Club had organised ‘Science Quiz competition’ for the students. About 144 students from 27 schools in Bangalore, from Class 8 to 12 participated. The first prize was bagged by VVS Sardar Patel High School.
They won a cash prize of Rs 3,000 and Tata Memorial Rolling trophy. Second prize was won by Sri Kumaran’s Children Home. The school won a cash prize of Rs 2,000 and runners-up trophy.
The third prize was bagged by National Public School in Indiranagar. They won a cash prize of Rs 1,000. All the participants will be given certificates and two books.
Booklet comprising questions asked in the quiz will be given to the students.
