The Third Front and NDA rocked Parliament for the third day, on Thursday, on the agrarian distress demanding a loan waiver and a package for the farmers.
While in the Rajya Sabha, the members focussed on the farmers’ issue, in the Lok Sabha, RJD members raised the issue of attacks on North Indians in Mumbai with some of them raising slogans against MNS chief Raj Thackeray.
Speaker angry
A visibly angry Speaker Somnath Chatterjee disapproved the action telling the members that they were “working overtime to destroy democracy”. Even his appeals for taking up the listed business went unheeded.
He even directed the officials to send him the names of members disrupting the proceedings.
Loan waiver
As both Houses met for the day, the Opposition members, including those of the Samajwadi Party, TDP, Shiv Sena, BJP and Akali Dal, stormed the well of the House demanding immediate loan waiver to farmers.
The only redeeming feature in the Lok Sabha was that Finance Minister P Chidambaram was allowed to present the Economic Survey 2007-08, as also papers by other ministers and members without any din.
It was a similar story in both the Houses when they met after an hour.
The Rajya Sabha, which saw an adjournment in the Question Hour, called it a day soon after it reassembled for Zero Hour amid similar scenes.
Deputy Chairman K Rahman Khan asked ministers to lay papers while Third Front and NDA members kept shouting slogans in the well. Despite the din over the issue of farmers’ plight, the House took up the “Motion of Thanks” on the President’s Address.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was present in the House when the Congress member Janardan Dwivedi moved the motion.
As the uproar continued, Mr Khan adjourned the House for the day.
