Bangalore University Academic Council on Friday approved a Rs 20 hike in the sports fee for the academic year 2008-09. As proposed in the sports policy, the fee will increase from Rs 30 to Rs 50, boosting the revenues from Rs 61.8 lakh to Rs 1.03 crore.
An Academic Council member pointed out that for the last 20 years, there has not been a hike in the sports fee. Number of colleges and students taking part in sports has gone up. But the money allotted for sports activities is too less. There has not been an adequate infrastructure for the practice, the member said, justifying the hike. On the Central government proposal for the inclusion of the subject ‘education’ in the State list from the concurrent list of the 7th schedule to the Constitution of India, the council deferred the matter.
