The deadlock over minimum support price for sugar cane ended on a sweet note on Saturday.
Late in the evening, the government announced a new package to end the deadlock, and offered to increase the MSP to Rs 160 from a sum of Rs 125 a tonne. Farmers had demanded Rs 200 but on Saturday, they accepted the government ‘s offer. The government had directed sugar factories to pay Rs 1,200 per tonne of sugar cane.
These decisions were briefed to the media at Raj Bhavan by Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha President K S Puttanaiah. Governor Rameshwar Thakur and Chief Secretary Sudhakar Rao were present. K R Srinivasan, DG & IGP negotiated between the agitating farmers and the government.
The farmers have decided to drop their Raj Bhavan chalo on March 3.
