The complete works of Sringeri Vidyaranyapura Parameshwar (SVP) Bhat must be published and for this financial assistance can be availed from the Kannada and Culture Department. Until now, only selected poems of the poet have been published, said play director and litterateur Prof Siddalinga Pattanashetty.
Speaking after receiving the Prof S V P Memorial Award for the year 2008 along with his wife Dr Hema Pattanashetty at Canara College on Saturday, he said the works of Parameshwar must be introduced to the next generation by reading them out in workshops.
One need not despair that a stalwart like Parameshwar is not popular among students, as more workshops and criticisms on his works will bring the poet alive again. The coastal district not only held his hand when he left Mysore, but gave him due recognition and respect, he pointed out.
Publisher and litterateur Dr Hema Pattanashetty said if one reads any work of a litterateur, he or she indirectly becomes a student of the litterateur.
Describing herself as a student of Paramehwar, she added that he had a profound personality wherein he kept the sorrows to himself and preserved a smile for everyone.
Litterateur Erya Laxminarayan Alva reminisced S V P’s contributions to Kannada language at a time when the whole region was under Madras province.
Parameshwar’s son Ramachandra and daughter-in-law Usha Ramachandra felicitated the Pattanashetty couple.
PU Education Board joint director (Retd) and student of Parameshwar Sheelavathi Kolambe also spoke. Writer Na Damodar Shetty and College Principal N R Javali were present.
Prof SVP Memorial Award was constituted in the year 2002, wherein the award is presented for noteworthy translation, publications made and contributions towards nurturing literature.
The award was presented for the 7th consecutive year in 2008 to the Pattanashetty couple from Dharwad who have received many awards including Nataka Academy Award and Sahitya Academy Award.
