Dalit leaders protest officials' absence
DH News Service, Shidlaghatta:
Alleging that the authorities have not attended the meet on atrocities act, several dalit leaders from the taluk forcible shut the taluk office, and held a protest outside it on Tuesday. Even the tahsildar was not spared, and she had to wait outside her own office for an hour.

Due to various reasons, the meet on the atrocities act that had been called for three times, had been postponed.
The meet called on Tuesday was not attended by several taluk-level officials. Irked by this, dalit leaders gheraoed the taluk office, alleging that the leaders’ police were anti-Dalit.

The construction of the Ambedkar Bhavan has remained pending for a few years. Land belonging to the dalits is being sold with illegal documents, and land has not been given for a crematorium for dalits. The land belonging to the burial ground, which had been encroached, has to be cleared. These were some of the issues that were to be discussed at the meet scheduled for Tuesday. “But officials from just 12 departments were present at the meet,” alleged leaders C M Munayya and Melur Manjunath.

She pleaded with them to open the office so that election-related work could be completed.  The protesters then asked her to give them details of the date and time for the next meet. They withdrew the protest only after they were assured that action would be taken.
