The master and the disciple
By Ramanath Narayanswamy

Satguru Murali Krishna's utterances on the relationship between the master and the disciple are unique and merit close attention.  Why do people seek realised masters? According to Swami Murali Krishna: "People seek specialist doctors for different ailments. A master is such a doctor who can cure internal ailments and cleanse the inner being. The master knows that everything external is transitory (maya), useless and that desire is the root cause of all problems.

Man will attain the ultimate peace and experience god only when he realises this fact and gives up all desires. Realised masters facilitate this process and make humans realise the purpose of their birth."

"Avatars (divine incarnations) are born from time to time to suppress evil, ensure justice and spread the message of god. For instance if one were to look at the various avatars of Vishnu, punishment for sin gets more and more severe and pardon less frequent from avatar to avatar.

For instance, repeated sins in the Narasimha avatara meant death. In the Kalki avatar, the punishment is severe and direct. For instance a single sin like the killing of a mosquito might directly mean a reduction in eyesight."

"All masters are an avatar of Lord Subramanya. For instance Sai Baba, Babaji (master of Raghavendra Swami) and Raghavendra Swami were avatars. Each avatar of a master has a purpose. Typically, a master takes rebirth only 200-500 years after the previous birth. It is predicted that many avatars and spiritual masters will arrive in India before 2014 and exhibit miracles. In fact, every state or district will have its share of spiritual gurus."

According to Satguru Murali Krishna, the mahatma is a gardener of souls: "The mahatma is like the soil. People sow a few seeds and the soil gives them bountiful crops. Similarly, it is the duty of the master to give people back ten times the offerings made to them. The mahatma is like the cable tower and the devotee like the mobile phone. Just as proximity to the tower means better communication, similarly wee must hold on to the feet of the master for guidance to attain the ultimate goal."

"It is pre-ordained destiny by which one comes in contact with masters. They plan everything but always maintain silence so that the forces of evil do not place obstacles in their path. The master will guide the disciple so long as the master cooperates with the former. A realised master is omniscient: there is nothing in the world that he or she does not know because they have become that! Every single action of a mahatma is aimed at uplifting the world and selfless service. Their actions cannot be judged by conventional wisdom.
