Four people were killed on the spot and one died in the hospital, when two lorries collided near Manangi in Sira taluk. Two others who were seriously injured have been admitted to a hospital.
The accident occurred when a speeding tanker crashed against a stationery lorry. The four who died on the spot have been identified as Khaleel, Abdul Razak, Nazeer Ahmed and Govind.
Also two farmers from Tavarkere who had been travelling in the tanker have been grievously injured and they were first admitted to a hospital in Sira and later shifted to Tumkur.
Superintendent of Police P Harishekaran visited the spot. Under the supervision of DySP Mohan Reddy, inspectors Gajendraprasad, Mariappa and their staff are doing further investigation.
Due to the accident traffic was disrupted for some time on National Highway 4. However, due to timely intervention of the police normalcy was restored fast.
SP Harishekaran has been constantly warning through loudspeakers and media that no vehicle should be parked on the side of the four-lane highway. In spite of this, such accidents keep occurring regularly due to an inner understanding between the authorities and regular road users, said a police officer on condition of anonymity.
