Support an independent candidate as CM
Sir,
JD(S) leader M P Prakash is reportedly holding talks with Congress leaders in Delhi to form an intermediate government in Karnataka. It shows that JD(S), which is not ready to hand over power to the BJP, wants to remain in power by taking the support of Congress. But some leaders on both sides are not ready for such an arrangement at this hour. At the same time, the BJP is ready for midterm elections. Congress, on the other hand, is facing a dilemma whether to form a government with the JD(S) or not.
One thing these parties can do to avoid midterm polls is to support an independent MLA to form government. The BJP’s complaint was that a Lingayat candidate was not given the Chief Minister’s post. Their wish can be fulfilled by supporting an independent Lingayat MLA to form the government.

Opportunism
Sir,
The sinister attempt by H D Deve Gowda to betray the coalition dharma by breaking JD(S)’ political understanding with BJP only showed his worst opportunistic side.
His justification of snapping ties with BJP on secular grounds is indeed laughable and will not be taken lightly by the people of Karnataka. If at all Deve Gowda wanted to expose the communal politics of BJP, then he should have opposed the government formation 20 months ago.
The fact was that he had a tacit understanding with his son Kumaraswamy because he wanted his son to occupy C M’s post at any cost. But one thing is sure. The JD(S) will become irrelevant after the assembly elections.

Support the deal
Sir,
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's candid admission on the non-implementation of the Nuclear deal due to the political compulsions of his coalition Government must be lauded.
BJP must stop its “wait and see” policy and help the nation as a responsible Opposition and not target the Prime Minister unnecessarily. If the Left fails to support the Nuclear deal, why not the Right support it for the sake of the nation!

Power-hungry
Sir,
The entire nation’s polity and the media are deeply immersed in the nuclear deal controversy due to the strong positions taken by Left and the PM.
Now that our PM has for once started giving signs of holding his ground, the Left has started their overtures with the so called UNPA. They are sure that they will never get this number again if there is a poll.
So, at any cost they want to hold on to their seats, at the same time tell the people that the nuclear deal is against our country's interest.

Give protection
Sir,
Former Pak Prime Minister Benzir Bhutto was greeted with bloodshed in Karachi, on her return after eight years of self-exile. It is very unfortunate.
The massacre proves beyond doubt that terrorism has reached unprecedented levels. Bhutto was informed that terrorists were planning to kill her.
She ignored it and this led to the killing of innocent people. Adequate protection should be provided for Bhutto.

Aftermath of pooja
Sir,
The photo of the Halasooru lake published on the front page, (DH, Oct 23) speaks volumes for the sense of disregard the devotees bear for the upkeep of the lake considered to be one of the beautiful lakes in Bangalore.
It is this lack of civic sense of those who pollute such rare water bodies in the Garden City that mars the beauty of the state capital. Unless a mass cleaning operation is undertaken on a large scale, the lake will never regain its pristine glory. The authorities should open their eyes and act immediately.
