Karnataka Governor Rameshwar Thakur on Wednesday said that it was up to the political parties to come up with required numbers to form a government in the State.
Responding to queries on the revival of the Legislative Assembly which has been kept in suspended animation, the Governor said: “It depends on political parties. I can’t anticipate. It is not my area. I can only be an observer. If somebody gives me in writing, it can be considered in the interest of the State and its people.”
The Governor, who was speaking to mediapersons at an informal interaction here, said all constitutional obligations would be looked into if anyone comes up with the required numbers. He said it was his duty to go by the Constitution. Thakur declined to go into questions on his recommendation to the Centre on President’s rule and dissolution of the Assembly, or whether the then chief minister, H D Kumaraswamy, pledged support to BJP in forming a government.
Asked whether he discussed the current political scenario with the Prime Minister and the Union Home Minister whom he met on Tuesday, Thakur said: “It was not discussed but the issue came up during the meetings.” He did not elaborate. To another question whether the current spell of President’s rule would be a long one, he said he was not in a position to say anything as first moves have to be made by parties.
On the appointment of advisors, Mr Thakur said the formalities were being finalised. “They will be appointed soon. There will be a committee of which the Governor will be the Chairman with the advisors and the Chief Secretary as its members.”
The Governor, responding to a query whether he would extend the Janata Darshan he was holding in Bangalore to other parts of the State, replied in the negative but added that he has asked officers to study the impact of his Janata Darshan. The district officers have also been asked to send weekly reports on the action taken on his Janata Darshan.
“I do Janata Darshan thrice a week. I have started a system where each department to which the grievance belongs to, gives a report once a week. Also, the response should to go the applicant. Today’s work should be done today,” the Governor said. The governor will return to Bangalore on Thursday.
