The Governor, in a letter to Mamata Banerjee, a copy of which was released to the media said “a person with no political or industrial affiliation can be invited to act as an unbiased inter-mediator in the matter. He or she can go into the demand articulated by you and give carefully thought-out findings for the earnest consideration of all sides.
“If this thought was acceptable to you, please suggest a name or names. I would request the State government to respond positively,” he said in a statement.
He said if his suggestion for a mediator was acceptable, he proposes status quo at the Tata Motors car plant site belonging to owners unwilling to part with their land and a halt to the agitation until the mediator comes out with a report.
The Governor also sent a copy of the letter to Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee.
The Governor’s statement came after he held a meeting with a Trinamool Congress-led delegation at Raj Bhavan discussing the issue.
Mamata Banerjee said that her party’s doors were open for talks but reiterated the condition that the State government has to agree in principle that it would return the 400 acres to the “unwilling” farmers.
Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee on Sunday renewed his appeal to Mamata to come for negotiation but dismissed TC’s demand for return of 400 acres of land as “unrealistic” as the land had been earmarked for ancillary units and it would not be possible to have the main plant if those units were relocated elsewhere.
“It is still possible to resolve the issue through negotiation. But the discussions should be within legal parameters and based on ground realities. They should not raise demands which are not realistic and legally impossible,” he said at a Left Front convention here.
“It seems those who are making this demand do not understand the meaning of the word ancillary,’’ the Chief Minister said.
