The police used teargas and resorted to lathicharge to disperse a mob, which blocked roads and torched a police jeep after the recovery of a body here on Saturday.
The police said that the mob attacked them with brickbats when they arrived to remove the roadblock.
Tear gas fired
The police used lathis and then fired 12 rounds of teargas to ward off the mob which injured four policemen, including a deputy commissioner rank officer. The injured policemen were discharged after first aid.
Peak hour traffic had to be diverted because of the trouble and the Rapid Action Force (RAF) deployed.
Protest
The mob was protesting that the man whose body was found was murdered. They claimed he was in love with a girl, whose father was against the match.
The body, having marks of multiple injuries, was sent for post-mortem. There was no report of any arrest after the incident.
Kolkata police commissioner Prasun Mukherjee described the incident as ‘uncalled for and unfortunate’ and ordered an inquiry into the killing.
