A regional-level workshop on Vermicomposting organised by the Vermitechnology Association of St Aloysius College Department of Zoology, was inaugurated by Vijaya Rural Development Foundation Vice President Premnath Alva, here on Tuesday.
He spoke on the depletion in the quality of soil caused by chemical fertilisers and pesticides used to boost agricultural produce during the green revolution and stated that Vermitechnology is a blessing to the soil in this situation.
“All waste is not waste. We can draw something from what we generally consider as waste or dirt,” said College Rector Fr Francis Serrao. He said that science is not to be preserved for the previleged, but has to touch our daily life and added that the workshop is showing how to use Science to recycle the waste. The Rector later released the ‘Vermibin,’ newly developed by the research team of the college.
Principal Fr Swebert D’Silva in his presidential address opined that a research or a study becomes meaningful only if helps the people. The ‘Veribin’ is helpful in disposing off the waste material at the same time creating manure with the help of earthworms.
HoD of Zoology Dr S Hareesh Joshi, Organising Committee Secretary Sudeep Ghate and others were present on the occasion.
