The taluk panchayat election for the post of president and vice-president that was scheduled to be held on Monday has been postponed as the Congress members who are in majority decided to boycott the elections.
The president’s post was reserved for Backward Class and Minority and vice-president was reserved for Scheduled Class (woman). Accordingly, Addada Sathish of BJP and Rekha of Congress filed nomination for president and vice-president’s post respectively.
But during the elections, seven Congress members protested against the reservation of president’s post for BCM on the grounds that it was violating the regulations and requested the election officer Dayananda to rectify the same. They staged a walk out.
Following this, election officer declared that the elections cannot be conducted as according to the rules, the nominations list must be read out in the house, which cannot be done in case of the absence of majority of the members.
Congress members A S Nagesh, Nagarathnamma, S Sanjay and others said that reservation of president’s post for Backward Class ‘B’ was illegal and violation of rules as Karnataka Raj Handbook 2007-08 states that Koppa Taluk Panchayat President’s post cannot be reserved for this particular group.
