STREET SMART WHEELER ROAD
Wheel of time has changed this road
Michael Patrao

Wheeler Road is an important arterial road in Bangalore East area. About two kms from M G Road, the Kamaraj Road merges on to Wheeler Road at Thoms Cafe-Promenade Road junction. It goes over the Bangalore East railway station track and from then on it is known as Wheeler Road extension and ends close to the Banaswadi railway station.

The road is named after the late British General John Wheeler Cleveland, who passed away on November 1, 1883 at the age of 92. One can still find his grave at St John’s cemetery in Kalpalli. Wheeler Road passes through a number of areas like Cleveland Town, Frazer Town (Pulakeshi Nagar), Cox Town (Sarvagna Nagar), Cooke Town, Thomas Town and St Mary’s Town. It links a number of roads such as Promenade Road, Coles Road and Robinson Road.

At the junction near Sindhi Colony, where the Buddha Vihar Road and Assaye Road join, there is Komala Refreshment, a popular restaurant. There are also trendy new fast food joints like US Pizza, Pizza Corner and Hotbreads. Steve’s Gym is one of the earliest gyms to come up in the City. The Indian Gymkhana, established in 1932, is now mired in controversy.

After the road crosses the Bangalore-Chennai railway track, it is known as Wheeler Road Extension. It passes through a largely residential locality. Smaller streets like Milton Street, High Street, Lewis Road and Charleston Road join this road. The Da Costa Square is a prime residential locality.

A cross road leads to the National Biblical, Cathetical and Liturgical Centre (NBCL). The Wheeler Road Extension used to be a nondescript stretch until many beauty parlours, boutiques, internet parlours and ATMs started functioning here.

The residential area around this road has become an ideal location for paying guest accommodation especially to those studying at the Ambedkar Dental and Medical College nearby.

A storm water drain passes at the junction near the Sindhi Colony and joins Ulsoor lake. Water gets stagnated from this point onwards whenever there is heavy rains. This has been happening for years, but very little has been done to solve the problem. As of now, the Cox Town stretch of this road from the Sindhi Colony junction upto the Bangalore East railway track is ‘disabled’ while the work on the railway overbridge is in progress.
Once this overbridge work is completed, Wheeler Road, as we know it today, will never be the same.
