Top seed Rohit Bist defeated fifth seed Adwait Sadwilkar 6-1, 7-6 (7-3) to enter the semifinals of the Bowring Institute Asian Tennis Federation (U-14) junior-ranking tournament here on Wednesday.
On a day when four more seeds bit the dust, Delhi’s Rohit lived up to his top billing to make it to the last four phase in a match between two baseliners.
After taking the first set rather comfortably, Rohit was made to work hard in the second set which went to the tie-breaker. Though Rohit failed to get his first serves right, his strong backhand returns helped break the stalemate and once he went 4-3 up, there was no stopping him from going for the jugular.
In the semifinals, Rohit will take on sixth seed Tushal Thawani. Thawani, interestingly, beat Rohit’s brother and fourth seed Ronit Bist 7-5, 7-5 in another last eight encounter.
Rohit and Ronit later teamed to enter the semifinals in the doubles section after sailing past Rohit Raje and Soni Jay 4-1, 4-1.
Meanwhile Karnataka’s campaign in the singles ended with both Vinod Gowda and seventh seed Sharan Patil bowing out. Himachal’s Digvijay Singh beat Gowda 6-1, 6-4 to set up a semifinal date with second seed Mayur Manjunath who ended Patil’s challenge with a 6-0, 6-4 win.
Ravina Shetty remained the last hope for Karnataka after she breezed past Sukhmani Kaurwadha 6-1, 7-5 to enter the semifinal in the girls section which saw two upsets on the day.
Sowjanya cameback from one set down to stun second seed Ali Sajjad Zainar 6-7 (5-6), 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 and book a semifinal date with Delhi’s Ankita Bhatia who shocked third seed Vishesh V K C 6-3, 4-6, 6-1.
