The victory lap of the triumphant Indian Twenty20 World Cup team at the Wankhede Stadium ended in a near-fiasco due to a surging crowd and had to be called off after the players had run less than half the perimeter of the ground.
The 35,000-strong crowd at the stadium, which braved inclement weather and sat through for nearly four hours for the team’s felicitation function to commence, suddenly lost its patience and broke down one section of the fencing on the south western part of the ground when the team members started the victory lap holding aloft the Tricolour. It was absolutely chaotic once the crowd broke through the barricade and started chasing the players. The lap of honour was immediately stopped and the policemen escorted the players to safety.
