However, the main procedure for worshipping Lord Ganesha remains almost the same.
The idol is installed in a mantapa formed specially for the purpose and the diety is worshiped by chanting mantras and shlokas. Brahmi muhurta (5.20 am to 6.40 am) is considered to be auspicious to begin the pooja.
Children visit different houses and have darshana of as many Ganesha idols as possible, on the Chaturthi day. It is a major occasion for family get-together as well as visiting relatives. The common offering to please the diety is modaka or kadubu.
Some families have a tradition of installing the Ganesha idol only in the eldest brother's house while families of other brothers join them on the occasion.
According to K Y Subramanya, priest at Jalakanteshwara temple in KR Market, Ganesha immersion can be done in the evening of the first day of its installation or on the third day or eleventh day. The other days not auspicious, according to him.
