Syria readies ground for W Asian talks  
President Bashar al-Assad of Syria met leaders of France, Turkey and Qatar in Damascus on Thursday with the aim of fostering dialogue between West Asia and the West and also encouraging France and the European Union (EU) to play a greater role in achieving a settlement between Syria and Israel.
Thailand's PM refuses to resign  
Embattled Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej called the political crisis in Thailand a shameful embarrassment for the country but vowed not to resign or dissolve Parliament, saying it was his job to protect democracy.
Hanna leaves 61 dead in Haiti  
Helicopters hovered over the flooded Haitian city of Gonaives plucking survivors from rooftops as authorities reported that Tropical Storm Hanna left 61 people dead.
