The Toyota Altis, which will be available in three grades and in five colours, is priced between Rs 10.83 lakh and Rs 12.86 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi).
This “second generation” car-- fitted with a 1.8 petrol litre engine—aims at consolidating Toyota’s position in the premium mid-size segment of Indian car industry.
Briefing reporters, Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) Managing Director Hiroshi Nakagawa, said “Our target is to sell an average of 2,000 units of Corolla Altis per month in India.”
“Till now Corolla has been popular with businessmen. Our Altis primarily aims at attracting upward moving young executives. With this we plan to create a new market in the C segment,” he added. On absorption of local components into Corolla Altis in Indian market, Mr Nakagawa said “currently the localisation level is 30 per cent”.
Compact car
Meanwhile, Toyota plans to launch compact car for the Indian market by end of 2010. The car will be manufactured at Toyota Kirloskar Motor’s second plant in Bidadi near Bangalore.
“We are working on manufacturing compact car by end of 2010. Our second plant is being ramped up to roll out these cars,” Mr Vikram Kirloskar said.
TKM Director Shekar Viswanathan said: “Our design on compact car will keep in mind the specific needs of the middle class as well as Indian road conditions.”
The TMK has already announced an investment of Rs 1,400 crore for the facility which is scheduled to begin operations by mid 2010.
