Road safety is a right
Road safety is a fundamental right and is an essential condition for the sustainable development of the society. Awareness on road safety is important for safe and secured living, said Mr Sunil Pillai, Zonal Manager South-CEAT Ltd.
He was speaking at the inauguration of the CEAT Shoppe Road Safety awareness campaign for school children, an initiative in collaboration with the traffic police.
In the city, road accidents are the biggest killers of those in the age group of 15-24 years. There is a need for citizens to join hands to control the road accidents and save the lives of the young, he added.
This awareness campaign will be held in three schools of Bangalore from September 6 to 9, including Aurobindo Vidya Mandir, Panchajanya Vidhya Peetha and Kendriya Vidyalaya. Students will be educated on statistics explaining the number of accidents occurring due to carelessness.
Appeal for forgiveness
The Bangalore Initiative for Religious Dialogue (BIRD) has appealed to the Christians to end all kinds of protests, peaceful or otherwise, against the violence on the community in Orissa and also to forgive its perpetrators.
“Forgiveness is totally an irrational demand to make, but forgiveness of all injuries has become an imperative for those who claim to follow Jesus of Nazareth. That is exactly what Glady Staines did ten years ago. She shamed the entire forces of darkness - Christian or Hindu.” Today her words should once again touch the Christian leaders who are protesting against the Hindus in the aftermath of the Orissa tragedy, said a BIRD representative.

Officials under fire
The Rural District Panchayat members came down heavily on the executives for ‘clandestinely’ doing works, which did not have the Panchayat’s approval.
At the 13th general body meeting of the Bangalore Rural District Panchayat on Saturday, members took strong exception to the way officials were performing their duties. Cheluvaraj alleged that several works like supply of potable water and supply of desks and chairs had started, though no permission was sought. Even the members were not informed about the works going on in their areas. At one stage, president C Muniswamy said he would cancel all the works started by the officials, without seeking the consent of the general body.
